New GTDC Report Highlights the Evolving Role of IT Distributors in Environmental Sustainability

The industry steps up global efforts with new initiatives and reporting capabilities.

The world’s leading consortium of technology distributors — the Global Technology Distribution Council (GTDC) — recently released a new report exploring the evolving role of distribution in environmental sustainability programs.

“The IT Industry Embraces Environmental Sustainability” study looks at the drivers of these global initiatives as well as the new solutions and services opportunities available to the greater technology community as a result. From minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and waste in packing and shipping to embracing the transition to green energy sources, this research report highlights the ways distributors are supporting these global efforts.

“Environmental sustainability is an important and growing point of focus for the IT industry,” emphasizes GTDC CEO Frank Vitagliano. “Distributors are engaging and providing thought leadership in this area and, with many initiatives already in place, continuing to enhance their objectives and reporting capabilities.”

Some of the initiatives highlighted in the study include:

  • Assessing companies’ current environmental impact to establish a baseline
  • Developing environmental sustainability plans covering a cross-section of countries with different regulations, standards and cultural norms
  • Meeting compliance and accounting reporting requirements for multiple constituents (i.e., regulators, investors, employees, customers
  • Determining how distributors and vendors collectively affect the environment

“The IT Industry Embraces Environmental Sustainability” report also explores potential sales and service opportunities with industry thought leaders. From delivering “green” options to economically disadvantaged communities to providing advanced refurbishment and lifecycle management programs, this study illustrates how the tech industry can lead and profit with these initiatives.
