Managed Services Journal compared five of the most popular remote monitoring and management products to help IT solution providers find the one that best matches their needs.


Remote monitoring and management (RMM) is a core function of any managed services business. By leveraging this powerful automation tool, IT solution providers can efficiently and remotely monitor and manage their customers’ IT assets. Thanks to the intelligence of the software, you can proactively attend to many customers and receive alerts if, or even before, problems arise.

There are many RMM platforms to choose from today. In an attempt to give you a jump start in your evaluation, Managed Services Journal rounded up a handful of the most popular products:

As with our other comparisons, we won’t be selecting a “best” product or “editor’s choice.” There’s no way we could pick one product that fits the needs of all our readers. Instead, we’ve broken the data down by key attributes to make it easier to compare and contrast the features and aspects most important to your business.

SaaS vs. On-Prem Delivery?

All of the solutions in this comparison are available via a SaaS model. There are, of course, instances when you’d prefer, or are required, to have your software running on-premises. Dedicated IT infrastructure, security, and administration costs aside, on-prem still has its place.

Kaseya VSA offers private dedicated hosting for customers with more than 10,000 endpoints.

Agents vs. Agentless

To monitor your customers with an RMM tool, you’ll need to somehow “connect” to the devices/services to see what they’re up to. There are two methods of establishing the monitoring – agents and agentless. There are pros and cons to each.

Agents are software provided by the RMM tool that create the connection between the RMM tool and the objects being monitored. Agents must be installed. They are more secure than agentless implementations, typically use less bandwidth, and can provide more comprehensive monitoring.

Agentless setups can be configured without additional software, making it easy to get up and running quickly. They rely on functionality in the monitored objects to share information about the device/service status. Unfortunately, this also limits their capabilities.

Among the products in this comparison:

  • Barracuda is available as agentless and with an agent. Agents are installed through software deployment features within Barracuda RMM. It will install natively for 64-bit operating systems only. All required software components must be installed in 64-bit mode. It supports Microsoft Windows Server 2022 (Standard, Datacenter, and Datacenter: Azure Edition), Microsoft Windows Server 2019 (Standard and Enterprise), and Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (Standard and Datacenter).
  • Kaseya VSA supports both agents and agentless management. Agents are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux and agentless for SNMP (network), hypervisor (VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft), MDM (Apple and Android), and IoT.
  • Datto RMM offers Windows, Mac, and Linux agents and agentless options for SNMP and VMWare ESXi.
  • ConnectWise Automate gives access and control over agent and agentless devices across the entire network.
  • With ConnectWise ScreenConnect, you can provide complete service and support via access agents for persistent connections to any unattended machine – anywhere in the world.

PSA Integrations

A must-have for any serious MSP, a PSA (professional services automation) tool allows you to centrally manage your customers, including functionality such as CRM, ticketing, billing, and reporting. Due to the critical nature of a PSA, your RMM platform and PSA must be tightly integrated, allowing for a complete exchange of information in real time.

• Barracuda: ConnectWise, Autotask, Salesforce, Tigerpaw, and ServiceNow
• Kaseya VSA: Kaseya’s suite of PSAs (BMS, Vortex, Autotask) and ConnectWise. It also directly integrates with IT Glue, the industry-leading IT documentation solution.
• Datto RMM: Autotask, ConnectWise, HaloPSA, Computicate, and Kaseya BMS.
• ConnectWise Automate and ScreenConnect: ConnectWise Manage and third-party integrations.

NOC Services

Recognizing the value a third-party NOC (network operation center) can provide, such as offloading mundane and repetitive monitoring tasks, some RMM providers include the service as an option.

Barracuda, ConnectWise, and Kaseya all offer NOC services. Pricing varies.

Pricing and Commitments

We asked each vendor to share details of their pricing models:
Barracuda is priced based on endpoints, defined as either workstations or servers. Each monitored endpoint requires a license. There is no minimum commitment required for partners.

Kaseya VSA’s MSRP is a tiered device-based price list based on volume and commitment terms. There is no difference in pricing for network devices, servers, hypervisors, PCs, Macs, cloud, and IoT devices. MDM support is at a lower price per device. Each IT Complete module is priced separately and is typically 30-50 percent less than competitive products. No minimum commitment is required.

Datto RMM is priced per device, with EDR and ransomware protection as add-ons. The minimum commitment is 40 devices.
