NRF 2026 proves that your managed services portfolio must become agent-ready

Secure your clients’ spot on the “invisible shelf” by mastering the infrastructure of autonomous commerce.

Retail Agentic AI

If you want to keep your retail and hospitality clients competitive, you can’t wait until 2027 to start thinking about agentic readiness. If you were following the buzz from the Javits Center during NRF 2026 earlier this month, you likely heard one term repeated in many keynotes: agentic commerce. While we’ve spent the last couple of years talking about AI chatbots that help humans find products, agentic commerce represents a fundamental shift. We’re moving from a world where AI assists shoppers to one where AI is the shopper.

These autonomous agents aren’t just summarizing reviews; they’re planning complex projects, comparing real-time inventory across multiple retailers, and executing the final checkout without a human having to click a single “Buy” button. For MSPs, this means the “end user” you are supporting is increasingly a piece of software rather than a person.

The focus is shifting from traditional SEO to agentic discovery

For decades, the goal for any retail software was to help merchants win at search engine optimization (SEO). If you could get a product to the top of a Google search page, you won. In the era of agentic commerce, the search bar is becoming a relic. We’re moving toward what some are calling generative engine optimization (GEO).

When a consumer tells their AI agent to find the best price on a specific set of tools available for pickup within five miles, that agent isn’t scrolling through Page 1 of search results. It’s querying structured data, checking real-time API endpoints, and evaluating trust signals.

The MSP opportunity:

  • Your clients’ “front end” is no longer just for human eyes.
  • If their platform doesn’t expose clean, high-fidelity data that a machine can parse in milliseconds, the agent will move on to a competitor that does.
  • You must help them manage the “invisible shelf,” which is powered by how well their systems communicate inventory accuracy, pricing logic, and fulfillment capabilities to external AI entities.

This transition is an operational mandate for your retail clients

It’s easy to dismiss this as another shiny object from a trade show, but the numbers coming out of NRF suggest otherwise. Projections indicate that AI agents could orchestrate nearly a trillion dollars in U.S. retail revenue by the end of the decade. This isn’t just about consumer convenience; it’s about operational efficiency. Retailers are looking for ways to reduce the drudgery of shopping, particularly for recurring purchases and complex logistical tasks.

If your clients’ systems are “black boxes” that require a human to navigate a UI, they are effectively locking themselves out of the fastest-growing segment of the market.

You need to manage the infrastructure that supports machine-led transactions

The technical requirements for agentic commerce differ from what we’ve seen in the past. It’s not just about having an API; it’s about having the right kind of API. During NRF, Google unveiled the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), designed to enable agents to execute commerce actions end-to-end.

Delegated authority represents a new security frontier for MSPs

When a machine initiates a payment, traditional fraud detection models – such as mouse movement detection or IP geofencing – may not work as effectively. We’re going to see a rise in protocols like agent-to-agent (A2A) and specialized payment rails designed for these autonomous actors.

As an MSP, you will need to manage “delegated authority,” where a human has given an agent permission to spend up to a certain amount on their behalf. Ensuring these permissions are secure and that the APIs aren’t being exploited will be a critical part of your security stack.

Here are the next steps you should take right now

The timeline for this shift is compressed; what we thought might be a five-year evolution is happening in months. The agentic era is officially here, and the window to secure a spot as a preferred platform for these new digital shoppers is closing.
